About ami maki
Ami Maki (She/They) is a Portland, Oregon based, queer, polyamorous, neurodivergent artist who exists to create beauty, comfort and joy, to connect deeply through art and shared space. She creates art to remind people of their inherent, sacred belonging to nature and remind them of its ability to effortlessly exist, unapologetically. Her most recent body of work and artist statement can be viewed here. Read her most recent interview here.
She aims to challenge societal norms and encourage self-love and acceptance by visually illustrating the ways our bodies reflect the natural world. She invites viewers to engage with her pieces, sparking conversations about identity, beauty, and this relationship to nature.
She seeks to celebrate the richness of diverse bodily experiences and the beauty that lies in imperfection. Her artistic journey is a continuous exploration of self-discovery, and hopes to convey the struggle and joy as relatable and universal.
She has been collaborating with people for over 25 years to create commissioned portraits (of people and pets) and feels most at home when creating work with, about and for others. She currently owns and operates a tattoo shop from her home. She teaches "Transformative Arts" (awakeningartsacademy.com), a modality for self-knowledge and growth through art. She teaches classes and private lessons in drawing and creative exploration. You can find her on instagram at: @amimakiartist, @amimakiink and @amimakitattoo
